The Poultry Book

These pictures were taken from a downloaded copy of The Poultry Book by W. B. Tegetmeier, F. Z. S.; with colour illustrations by Harrison Weir Published in 1867, it is subtitled "Comprising the breeding and management of profitable and ornamental poultry; their qualities and characteristics."

The highlight of this set has to be the Hamburghs for me because of their plumage although the game fowl look exceptionally elegant and formal.

Columbian Fowl
Columbian Fowl

I can't really see much difference between this and Spanish fowl in the picture although the tail feathers seem even more exaggerated on the cockerel. Apparently Columbian were somewhat heavier than Spanish breeds of chickens.

Not really the best illustration in the book but it's actually quite an evocative picture.

Spanish Fowl
Black & White Spanish Fowls

There may be little difference between the Spanish and Columbian chickens to my eyes but they certainly have a Spanish style to them.

Queue the Flamenco music!

Game Fowl - Duckwing
Duckwing Game Fowl

It's fairly obvious where the name comes from, looking at the wings. Sadly the game fowl were often used for cock fighting and you may note the vulnerable comb has been bred out of these.

Hamburgh Chickens
Golden Pencilled Hamburghs

I must admit, these give the Polish a run for their money in the best dressed chicken competition.

Unusually, the hen is more attractive than the cockerel although his tail feathers are more dramatic
