Houdan FowlsIt's clearer from this wood engraving than the colour plate in the previous set that these hens may have a similar style to the Polish in their plumage, their body confirmation is more bulky and suitable as a meat bird.
|
Crevecoeurs & Cochin ChickensThe Crevecoeurs were another popular French meat breed but I think the superiority of the Cochins is obvious in this wood engraving.

Begum Pilly GaguzesI think these were an Indian fowl recently imported (in 1860s) for the purpose of cross breeding with Dorkings. Apparently illustrating a type of fowl common over a large portion of the south of Asia They have a certain raptor like look in their eyes, don't they?

White & Game Bantams"It is usually stated in works on Poultry, that the smaller varieties of domesticated fowls, known under the general name of Bantams, are the descendants of certain distinct species of wild fowls existing in the Eastern Archipelago. There is, however, no real foundation for this statement. Bantams of all kinds are merely domesticated varieties that have been reared and rendered permanent by the care of man."
